In 2021, the ASEAN frozen potato market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, overseas shipments of frozen potatoes decreased by -9.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 91%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen potato exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 46% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together constituting 81% of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 9.1% share, followed by Thailand (6.7%). Singapore (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +34.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen potato supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +22.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of frozen potatoes imported in ASEAN surged to X tons, increasing by 27% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 27%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total imports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total imports.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 72% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +26.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 7.9%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Philippines ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
