In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in the ASEAN gingerbread market, when its value decreased by -0.3% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Gingerbread Production in ASEAN
In value terms, gingerbread production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 10%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Gingerbread Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, shipments abroad of gingerbread increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gingerbread exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 52%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 58% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together generating a 38% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to gingerbread exports from Thailand stood at -2.9%. At the same time, Myanmar (+5.4%), Malaysia (+4.7%) and Indonesia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012-2022. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Philippines (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+5.6 p.p.), Thailand (+4.5 p.p.), Vietnam (+4.3 p.p.), Myanmar (+4 p.p.) and Malaysia (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Philippines saw its share reduced by -12.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest gingerbread supplier in ASEAN, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand stood at -4.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+2.1% per year) and Indonesia (+0.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Gingerbread Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, imports of gingerbread in ASEAN fell sharply to X tons, which is down by -79.1% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 325%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
In value terms, gingerbread imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 89%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of gingerbread imports in 2022 were Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together accounting for 87% of total import. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), generating a 4.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Cambodia (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) - each accounted for an 8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +67.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest gingerbread importing markets in ASEAN were Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 70% of total imports.
Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +69.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 269% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
