In 2021, the ASEAN goat hides and skins market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Goat Or Kid Hides And Skins in ASEAN

In value terms, goat hides and skins production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 53%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), with a combined 87% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

In 2021, the average yield of goat or kid hides and skins in ASEAN surged to X kg per head, with an increase of 61% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum.

The global number of animals slaughtered for goat hides and skins production reduced markedly to X heads in 2021, waning by -37.6% against 2020. In general, the number of producing animals continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2020, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of goat or kid hides and skins, when their volume decreased by -20.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 284%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, goat hides and skins exports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 6.7% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), creating a 9% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the goat or kid hides and skins exports, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Myanmar (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+63 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Indonesia and Myanmar saw its share reduced by -6.5% and -27.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest goat hides and skins supplier in ASEAN, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam stood at +30.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-7.7% per year) and Myanmar (-6.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 102%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Goat Or Kid Hides And Skins

Imports in ASEAN

Goat hides and skins imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, picking up by 19% against the year before. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +27.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, goat hides and skins imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand represented the largest importer of goat or kid hides and skins in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 69% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together generating a 28% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to goat hides and skins imports into Thailand stood at +8.6%. At the same time, Cambodia (+115.7%) and Indonesia (+37.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +115.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+16 p.p.), Indonesia (+6.5 p.p.) and Cambodia (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -24.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported goat or kid hides and skins in ASEAN, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 5.6% share.

In Thailand, goat hides and skins imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (-8.2% per year) and Indonesia (+32.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Thailand ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) and Cambodia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
