Goat Meat Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN goat meat market fell to $X in 2022, declining by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Goat Meat Production in ASEAN

In value terms, goat meat production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 22%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together accounting for 87% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +10.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

In 2022, the average goat meat yield in ASEAN declined significantly to X kg per head, with a decrease of -23.4% against the year before. Overall, the yield showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the goat meat yield attained the maximum level at X kg per head in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for goat meat production in ASEAN soared to X heads, picking up by 30% against the previous year. This number increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs at X heads in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of goat meat were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 569% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, goat meat exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1,102%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) represented the largest exporter of goat meat, constituting 63% of total exports. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Malaysia (12%) and Vietnam (8%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to goat meat exports from Myanmar stood at -5.8%. At the same time, Singapore (+56.4%) and Vietnam (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +56.4% from 2012-2022. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Singapore (+17 p.p.), Vietnam (+5.9 p.p.) and Malaysia (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Myanmar saw its share reduced by -25.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest goat meat supplier in ASEAN, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6.7% share.

In Myanmar, goat meat exports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+43.7% per year) and Malaysia (-1.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Goat Meat Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, the amount of goat meat imported in ASEAN soared to X tons, picking up by 59% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 182% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, goat meat imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 136%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) was the largest importer of goat meat, generating 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together mixing up a 33% share of total imports.

Imports into Malaysia decreased at an average annual rate of -9.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Singapore (+28.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +28.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Singapore and Malaysia increased by +12 and +4.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest goat meat importing markets in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X), together accounting for 99% of total imports.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +24.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -18.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
