In 2021, the ASEAN market for graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Overall, production showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production of reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² decreased by -11.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 54%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the main exporter of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m², constituting 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), making up a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Indonesia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total exports.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² exports, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malaysia (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Singapore (-3.4%) and Indonesia (-23.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+73 p.p.) and Malaysia (+8.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-4 p.p.) and Indonesia (-76.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² supplier in ASEAN, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with an 8.6% share.

In Thailand, exports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² increased at an average annual rate of +34.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+17.0% per year) and Singapore (-1.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, purchases abroad of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2021. Singapore (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (7.4%) and Thailand (5.5%). The Philippines (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +25.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Singapore ($X), together accounting for 75% of total imports.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +19.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+10.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
