Graphite Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN graphite market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Graphite Production in ASEAN

In value terms, graphite production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Graphite Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, overseas shipments of graphite (natural) increased by 5.9% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, graphite exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 60%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) was the main exporter of graphite (natural), generating 61% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 31% share, followed by Malaysia (4.6%). The following exporters - Thailand (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +48.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest graphite supplying countries in ASEAN were Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 64% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +45.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -45.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 43%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Graphite Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X tons of graphite (natural) were imported in ASEAN; with an increase of 6% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 116%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented the largest importers of graphite (natural) in ASEAN, together mixing up 69% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total imports. The following importers - Myanmar (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - each recorded a 5.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +18.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest graphite importing markets in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising 86% of total imports. Malaysia, the Philippines and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +11.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, graphite import price increased by +64.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
