Green Bean Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN green bean market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Green Bean Production in ASEAN

In value terms, green bean production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 53%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of green bean production was Indonesia (X tons), comprising approx. 67% of total volume. Moreover, green bean production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), threefold.

In Indonesia, green bean production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Thailand (-0.5% per year) and the Philippines (-0.8% per year).

In 2022, the average green bean yield in ASEAN reduced slightly to X tons per ha, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 4.3% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the green bean yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of green beans were harvested in ASEAN; standing approx. at the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to green bean production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Green Bean Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of green beans increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 45%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green bean exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 61%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together constituting 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), mixing up a 6.6% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green bean supplying countries in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), Myanmar ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together comprising 93% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +17.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Green Bean Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, imports of green beans in ASEAN rose slightly to X tons, picking up by 4.5% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green bean imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Singapore represented the key importer of green beans in ASEAN, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 78% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), committing a 15% share of total imports. Brunei Darussalam (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of green beans. At the same time, Vietnam (+41.6%), Malaysia (+11.8%), Brunei Darussalam (+5.7%) and Indonesia (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +41.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Malaysia and Vietnam increased by +9.7 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported green beans in ASEAN, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Brunei Darussalam, with a 1.9% share.

In Singapore, green bean imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+1.2% per year) and Brunei Darussalam (+3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
