Halogenated Hydrocarbon Derivative Market Size in ASEAN

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the ASEAN halogenated hydrocarbon derivative market, when its value decreased by -6.7% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed resilient growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Halogenated Hydrocarbon Derivative Production in ASEAN

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 35%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

Halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports fell to X tons in 2022, declining by -14.8% compared with the previous year. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 91%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) represented the key exporter of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons, making up 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up a 17% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons exports, with a CAGR of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Singapore (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+22 p.p.) and Thailand (+4.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest halogenated hydrocarbon derivative supplier in ASEAN, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Indonesia, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+5.2% per year) and Singapore (+0.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 58%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Halogenated Hydrocarbon Derivative Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, purchases abroad of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons decreased by -22.4% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 21%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 64%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the key importers of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons in 2022, reaching near 38% and 32% of total imports, respectively. The Philippines (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (10%) and Malaysia (5.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +6.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest halogenated hydrocarbon derivative importing markets in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 71% of total imports. The Philippines and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +15.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative import price increased by +66.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
