Hazelnut Market Size in ASEAN
In 2021, the ASEAN hazelnut market increased by 1.8% to $X, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +51.9% against 2015 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Hazelnut Production in ASEAN
In value terms, hazelnut production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hazelnut production, accounting for 80% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Lao People's Democratic Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), sixfold.
In Lao People's Democratic Republic, hazelnut production increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+1.9% per year) and Singapore (+0.9% per year).
Hazelnut Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, shipments abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -23.6% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 56%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. Singapore (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from Vietnam stood at -13.7%. At the same time, Singapore (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of Vietnam (+11 p.p.) and Singapore (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in ASEAN, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.
In Vietnam, hazelnut exports declined by an average annual rate of -18.8% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 6%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+4.9%).
Hazelnut Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, overseas purchases of hazelnuts decreased by -2.9% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +36.8% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, hazelnut imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.8% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Vietnam dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 95% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), mixing up a 4.7% share of total imports.
Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hazelnuts imports, with a CAGR of +5.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in ASEAN, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 2.5% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-0.2%).
