Hemp Tow Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN hemp tow market dropped to $X in 2022, shrinking by -7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption faced a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Hemp Tow Production in ASEAN

In value terms, hemp tow production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 117%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Cambodia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hemp tow production, accounting for 70% of total volume. Moreover, hemp tow production in Cambodia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Singapore (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (X kg), with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Cambodia stood at +1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+0.8% per year) and Vietnam (+0.7% per year).

Hemp Tow Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, approx. X kg of hemp tow were exported in ASEAN; with an increase of 206% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 31,600% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hemp tow exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,177%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore was the main exporter of hemp tow in ASEAN, with the volume of exports accounting for X kg, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X kg), committing an 11% share of total exports.

Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hemp tow exports, with a CAGR of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. Indonesia (-20.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Singapore increased by +41 percentage points.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) emerged as the largest hemp tow supplier in ASEAN, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore stood at +23.7%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 196% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 1,077%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+25.8%).

Hemp Tow Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, the amount of hemp tow imported in ASEAN shrank modestly to X tons, which is down by -4.3% compared with the previous year. In general, imports faced a precipitous slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 248% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hemp tow imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 154%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of hemp tow, namely Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Cambodia (X tons), making up a 7.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Singapore (X kg) and Thailand (X kg) - each finished at a 7.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +15.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hemp tow in ASEAN, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia totaled +13.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+5.8% per year) and Cambodia (-20.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 188%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+36.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
