Market Size for Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat in ASEAN

The ASEAN market for horse, mule and donkey meat dropped to $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat in ASEAN

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together comprising 93% of total production. Malaysia and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

The average horse, mule and donkey meat yield amounted to X kg per head in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 20%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the horse, mule and donkey meat yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The global number of animals slaughtered for horse, mule and donkey meat production fell slightly to X heads in 2022, waning by -3.4% compared with 2021. Overall, the number of producing animals continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the number of producing animals increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

In 2019, overseas shipments of horse, mule and donkey meat decreased by 0% to X kg, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 361%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2019, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports stood at $X in 2019. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a sharp reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 269%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2019, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Export Prices by Country

In 2019, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Singapore.

From 2013 to 2019, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Singapore amounted to -11.4% per year.

Imports of Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, supplies from abroad of horse, mule and donkey meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 1,493%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 2,370% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), constituting a 9.1% share of total imports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the horse, mule and donkey meat imports, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+13.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Vietnam (+35 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-9.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported horse, mule and donkey meat in ASEAN, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam stood at +34.8%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, horse, mule and donkey meat import price decreased by -1.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 55%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia totaled $X per ton.
