Exports in ASEAN
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of confectionery, cocoa or chocolate decreased by -21.2% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, confectionery-making industrial machinery exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 88%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of confectionery, cocoa or chocolate, namely Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X units), achieving a 6.3% share of total exports. Thailand (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of -0.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest confectionery-making industrial machinery supplying countries in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 12%.
The Philippines, with a CAGR of +8.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -21.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, supplies from abroad of industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of confectionery, cocoa or chocolate was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 53%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, confectionery-making industrial machinery imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 102%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Indonesia was the key importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 66% of total imports. Malaysia (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X units) and Thailand (X units). All these countries together took near 26% share of total imports. The Philippines (X units) and Singapore (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Indonesia decreased at an average annual rate of -3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012-2022. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-5.1%), Malaysia (-12.0%) and Singapore (-14.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines increased by +11, +3.2 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial machinery for the manufacture or preparation of confectionery, cocoa or chocolate in ASEAN, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (-10.3% per year) and Vietnam (-2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 32%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
