In 2021, overseas shipments of industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables decreased by -2.9% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 81%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fruit-preparation industrial machinery exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 97% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X units), Singapore (X units) and Vietnam (X units) represented roughly 97% of total exports in 2021.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest fruit-preparation industrial machinery supplier in ASEAN, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Vietnam, fruit-preparation industrial machinery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+9.2% per year) and Thailand (+6.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, falling by -7.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 106% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X units of industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables were imported in ASEAN; remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 181% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fruit-preparation industrial machinery imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia represented the key importer of industrial machinery for the preparation of fruits, nuts or vegetables in ASEAN, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 52% of total imports in 2021. Singapore (X units) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (10%), Indonesia (8.9%), the Philippines (8.5%) and Vietnam (5.4%). Cambodia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +12.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+69.6%), the Philippines (+25.1%), Vietnam (+12.9%), Indonesia (+11.5%) and Thailand (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +69.6% from 2012-2021. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia, the Philippines and Cambodia increased by +7.1, +5.8 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +60.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -20.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 84% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
