Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 30%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight slump. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the main exporter of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 62% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together mixing up a 38% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to internal combustion engine (excl. diesel, moto vehicle and aircraft) exports from Thailand stood at -14.0%. At the same time, Indonesia (+31.5%), Vietnam (+27.6%), Myanmar (+19.6%) and Malaysia (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +31.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest internal combustion engine (excl. diesel, moto vehicle and aircraft) supplier in ASEAN, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand amounted to -1.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+29.6% per year) and Myanmar (+15.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 167% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) rose slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) dominates aircraft) structure, together comprising 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), achieving a 7.5% share of total imports. In value terms, the largest internal combustion engine (excl. diesel, moto vehicle and aircraft) importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +23.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
