After three years of decline, the ASEAN knife and scissors market increased by 12% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of knives, scissors and blades were exported in ASEAN; jumping by 95% against 2020. Overall, exports showed a remarkable increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, knife and scissors exports amounted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -0.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 67% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 29% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the knives, scissors and blades exports, with a CAGR of +32.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malaysia (+11.1%), Vietnam (+7.3%) and Singapore (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Thailand (+44 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-3.1 p.p.), Singapore (-7.3 p.p.) and Vietnam (-30.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest knife and scissors supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 92% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +8.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -44.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, overseas purchases of knives, scissors and blades increased by 35% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +49.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, knife and scissors imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -6.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 68%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented roughly 76% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Vietnam (6.3%). Singapore (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +16.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 67% of total imports.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +15.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -10.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+39.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
