The ASEAN lead market contracted to $X in 2022, waning by -3.4% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Lead Production in ASEAN
In value terms, lead production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Lead Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, overseas shipments of lead increased by 8.5% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lead exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 59%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) represented the main exporter of lead, comprising 42% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Myanmar (12%), the Philippines (7.6%), Thailand (7.1%), Singapore (5.9%) and Cambodia (5.3%).
Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of lead. At the same time, Myanmar (+84.3%), Cambodia (+30.5%), the Philippines (+16.8%) and Thailand (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +84.3% from 2012-2022. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-17.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+12 p.p.), the Philippines (+6.1 p.p.), Cambodia (+5 p.p.), Vietnam (+1.8 p.p.) and Thailand (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -29% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest lead supplier in ASEAN, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with an 11% share.
In Malaysia, lead exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+0.9% per year) and Myanmar (+93.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 16%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Thailand ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) and Myanmar ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lead Imports
Imports in ASEAN
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of lead increased by 1.7% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lead imports stood at $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) was the key importer of lead, achieving 54% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held near 44% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Singapore (+16.0%) and the Philippines (+13.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +16.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-3.4%), Thailand (-3.4%) and Malaysia (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+30 p.p.) and the Philippines (+5.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-10 p.p.), Thailand (-10.6 p.p.) and Malaysia (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lead in ASEAN, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam totaled +10.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-2.0% per year) and Indonesia (-1.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
