Leek Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN leek market dropped to $X in 2022, declining by -6.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +8.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Leek Production in ASEAN

In value terms, leek production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 112% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Indonesia (X tons) remains the largest leek producing country in ASEAN, comprising approx. 99% of total volume.

The average leek yield contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -4% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the leek yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables production in ASEAN totaled X ha, approximately equating 2021. In general, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 8.2% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Leek Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, leek exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) took an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (6.7%).

Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+29.5%) and Vietnam (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Thailand (+7.2 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest leek supplier in ASEAN, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia stood at +8.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+5.4% per year) and Thailand (+25.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -17.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Leek Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas purchases of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables decreased by -11.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, leek imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 46%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the key importer of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in ASEAN, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (16%) and Thailand (12%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +85.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 95% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +72.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 14%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
