Lemon And Lime Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN lemon and lime market rose rapidly to $X in 2022, picking up by 5.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Lemon And Lime Production in ASEAN

In value terms, lemon and lime production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 83%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of lemon and lime production was Thailand (X tons), comprising approx. 63% of total volume. Moreover, lemon and lime production in Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Vietnam (X tons), threefold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Thailand amounted to +1.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Vietnam (+0.7% per year) and Malaysia (+11.7% per year).

The average lemon and lime yield fell modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the lemon and lime yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The lemon and lime harvested area expanded modestly to X ha in 2022, growing by 2.8% compared with the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the lemon and lime harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Lemon And Lime Exports

Exports in ASEAN

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -2.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 60%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 111%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 75% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (6.5%). Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lemon and lime exports from Vietnam stood at +34.0%. At the same time, Thailand (+49.5%) and Singapore (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +49.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+49 p.p.) and Thailand (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -10.8% and -40.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest lemon and lime supplier in ASEAN, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 4.7% share.

In Vietnam, lemon and lime exports expanded at an average annual rate of +34.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+39.2% per year) and Singapore (+5.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Lemon And Lime Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, supplies from abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -4.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented the main importer of lemons and limes in ASEAN, achieving 90% of total import. The following importers - Brunei Darussalam (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) - together made up 9.3% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +44.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Indonesia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 77% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +51.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+14.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
