The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to lettuce and chicory production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, exports of lettuce and chicory in ASEAN skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 17% compared with 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Malaysia was the key exporter of lettuce and chicory in ASEAN, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 60% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together generating a 39% share of total exports.
Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+22.0%) and Vietnam (+20.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+21 p.p.) and Vietnam (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-8.5 p.p.) and Malaysia (-12.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest lettuce and chicory supplier in ASEAN, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 5.3% share.
In Malaysia, lettuce and chicory exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+31.1% per year) and Vietnam (+16.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 18%. For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in purchases abroad of lettuce and chicory, which increased by 23% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports rose notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Thailand (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) were the main importers of lettuce and chicory in ASEAN, together comprising 78% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), comprising a 16% share of total imports. Brunei Darussalam (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
