Linoleum Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN linoleum market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after eight years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a abrupt setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Linoleum Production in ASEAN

In value terms, linoleum production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 3.1%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Linoleum Exports

Exports in ASEAN

For the fourth consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in shipments abroad of linoleum, which decreased by -38.8% to X square meters in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 539% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, linoleum exports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 522% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam was the main exporter of linoleum in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X square meters, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2021. Myanmar (X square meters) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (16%). Indonesia (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to linoleum exports from Vietnam stood at +25.7%. At the same time, Myanmar (+48.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +48.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-3.0%) and Indonesia (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+39 p.p.) and Myanmar (+21 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Indonesia and Thailand saw its share reduced by -10.1% and -35.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Myanmar ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 92% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +25.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per square meter, increasing by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 51% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per square meter), while Myanmar ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Linoleum Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X square meters of linoleum were imported in ASEAN; increasing by 21% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 134%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, linoleum imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The Philippines represented the major importing country with an import of around X square meters, which finished at 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Myanmar (X square meters), creating a 26% share of total imports. Thailand (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +32.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Myanmar (+151.6%) and Thailand (+47.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +151.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Myanmar, the Philippines and Thailand increased by +26, +3.4 and +2.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported linoleum in ASEAN, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Myanmar ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

In the Philippines, linoleum imports increased at an average annual rate of +49.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+87.3% per year) and Thailand (+30.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per square meter, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per square meter), while Myanmar ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
