Linseed Market Size in ASEAN

After two years of growth, the ASEAN linseed market decreased by -4.4% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption showed a pronounced slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Linseed Production in ASEAN

In value terms, linseed production contracted dramatically to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 945% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of linseed production was Myanmar (X tons), accounting for 99% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Myanmar amounted to +7.2%.

Linseed Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, shipments abroad of linseed increased by 213% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 791% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, linseed exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 604% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Myanmar prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), achieving a 6.7% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Myanmar increased at an average annual rate of +22.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+222.2%) and Singapore (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +222.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Myanmar and Thailand increased by +89 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest linseed supplying countries in ASEAN were Myanmar ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 95% of total exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +316.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -69.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 175% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+29.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Linseed Imports

Imports in ASEAN

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of linseed decreased by -4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 81%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, linseed imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of linseed. At the same time, Thailand (+27.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +27.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Thailand (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-4.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported linseed in ASEAN, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 10% share of total imports.

In Vietnam, linseed imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 22%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-1.9%).
