In 2021, the ASEAN paper machinery market decreased by -38.8% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption showed a abrupt contraction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper machinery production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +64.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN
After three years of decline, overseas shipments of machinery for making paper or paperboard increased by 13% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 264% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper machinery exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 434% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Singapore (X units) was the main exporter of machinery for making paper or paperboard, committing 63% of total exports. Indonesia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Malaysia (13%). Vietnam (X units) held a little share of total exports.
Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for making paper or paperboard exports, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+17.9%) and Malaysia (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Vietnam (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+61 p.p.), Indonesia (+17 p.p.) and Malaysia (+6.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest paper machinery supplier in ASEAN, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 4.6% share.
In Singapore, paper machinery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +43.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+6.3% per year) and Indonesia (+12.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 304% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Paper Machinery Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, approx. X units of machinery for making paper or paperboard were imported in ASEAN; declining by -45.9% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper machinery imports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 112%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Indonesia (X units) and Vietnam (X units) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X units). All these countries together took approx. 18% share of total imports. The following importers - the Philippines (X units), Cambodia (X units) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X units) - together made up 8.9% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +26.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for making paper or paperboard in ASEAN, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 12% share.
In Vietnam, paper machinery imports expanded at an average annual rate of +25.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-22.6% per year) and Thailand (+2.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 34% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Cambodia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
