In 2022, the amount of machines for making containers of paper or paperboard exported in ASEAN fell to X units, with a decrease of -11.3% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 128%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard container machine exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 72% of total exports in 2022. Malaysia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.5% share, followed by Singapore (6.4%) and Thailand (6.4%). The Philippines (X units) and Indonesia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+11.6%), the Philippines (+9.1%) and Malaysia (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-2.8%) and Indonesia (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+20 p.p.), the Philippines (+4.3 p.p.) and Thailand (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -4.5%, -10.9% and -11% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest paperboard container machine supplier in ASEAN, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 10% share.

In Vietnam, paperboard container machine exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+0.1% per year) and Malaysia (+1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, jumping by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+43.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, approx. X units of machines for making containers of paper or paperboard were imported in ASEAN; shrinking by -9.4% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paperboard container machine imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -23.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 56%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Thailand (X units), distantly followed by Vietnam (X units), Indonesia (X units) and Malaysia (X units) were the largest importers of machines for making containers of paper or paperboard, together generating 94% of total imports. The Philippines (X units) and Cambodia (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +18.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest paperboard container machine importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 17%.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +8.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 4.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 15%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
