The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 192% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Lao People's Democratic Republic represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 70% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by the Philippines (7%).

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 87%. Vietnam was the key importer of manganites, manganates and permanganates, molybdates and tungstates in ASEAN, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (8.1%) and the Philippines (5.4%). Singapore (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -5.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+34.6%), Malaysia (+17.2%) and the Philippines (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +34.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-6.9%) and Indonesia (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam increased by +21, +4.5, +4.1 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported manganites, manganates and permanganates, molybdates and tungstates in ASEAN, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 6.3% share.

In Vietnam, manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+20.0% per year) and Indonesia (-3.9% per year).
