The ASEAN market for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Production of Manufactured Tobacco, Extracts And Essences in ASEAN
In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports of Manufactured Tobacco, Extracts And Essences
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exported in ASEAN expanded significantly to X tons, with an increase of 5.8% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) were the major exporters of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences in ASEAN, together creating 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), committing a 10% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +28.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplying countries in ASEAN were the Philippines ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +31.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Manufactured Tobacco, Extracts And Essences
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, overseas purchases of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences decreased by -1.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 59%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) represented the main importer of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences, committing 42% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 54% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+30.1%), Myanmar (+27.2%) and Indonesia (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-9.9%), Malaysia (-10.3%) and Cambodia (-15.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+13 p.p.), Myanmar (+11 p.p.), Indonesia (+8.5 p.p.) and Thailand (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-7.5 p.p.), Cambodia (-10.4 p.p.) and Malaysia (-20 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences importing markets in ASEAN were the Philippines ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 77% of total imports. Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +25.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
