Marble And Travertine Market Size in ASEAN
The ASEAN marble and travertine market fell modestly to $X in 2021, reducing by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the market value increased by 5.3%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, marble and travertine production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 5.5% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN
After three years of decline, overseas shipments of marble and travertine increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 58%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 65%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cambodia was the major exporter of marble and travertine in ASEAN, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (11%) and Myanmar (9.5%). Malaysia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Cambodia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the marble and travertine exports, with a CAGR of +171.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Myanmar (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Vietnam (-4.0%), Malaysia (-12.1%) and Indonesia (-19.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cambodia (+57 p.p.) and Myanmar (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-2.2 p.p.), Malaysia (-2.3 p.p.) and Indonesia (-48.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine supplier in ASEAN, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cambodia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 9% share.
In Vietnam, marble and travertine exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+88.4% per year) and Indonesia (-22.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -26.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 17%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Marble And Travertine Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of marble and travertine imported in ASEAN contracted slightly to X tons, approximately equating the year before. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) was the key importer of marble and travertine, mixing up 40% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together took near 56% share of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine imports into Vietnam stood at +10.9%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+30.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +30.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-5.7%), Thailand (-8.4%), Malaysia (-9.6%) and Indonesia (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+32 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -3.7%, -4.3% and -27.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest marble and travertine importing markets in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X), together accounting for 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Malaysia and Lao People's Democratic Republic, which together accounted for a further 31%.
Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +29.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
