Matches Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the ASEAN matches market, when its value decreased by -1.3% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the market value increased by 6.9%. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, matches exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 16%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Indonesia decreased at an average annual rate of -7.2% from 2012 to 2021. Malaysia (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia increased by +1.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest matches supplier in ASEAN, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia stood at -7.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.8%).

Matches Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, purchases abroad of matches decreased by -18.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 118% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, matches imports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the main importers of matches in ASEAN, together reaching near 76% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Indonesia (5%). The following importers - the Philippines (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +74.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 88% of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +91.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
