After two years of growth, the ASEAN market for meat of camels and other animals decreased by -9.8% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Production of Meat of Camels and Other Animals in ASEAN

In value terms, camel and other animal meat production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 21%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), with a combined 99% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +0.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average camel and other animal meat yield in ASEAN shrank modestly to X kg per head, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 5.1%. Over the period under review, the camel and other animal meat yield attained the peak level at X kg per head in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

The global number of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production totaled X heads in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. In general, the number of producing animals, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the number of producing animals increased by 1.4%. Over the period under review, this number reached the peak level at X heads in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

Camel and other animal meat exports soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 74% compared with the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.1% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 98% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +11.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 30% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, purchases abroad of meat of camels and other animals increased by 81% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore was the main importer of meat of camels and other animals in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Philippines (18%), Myanmar (7.8%), Indonesia (6%) and Vietnam (5.8%). Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to camel and other animal meat imports into Singapore stood at +4.2%. At the same time, Myanmar (+37.6%) and the Philippines (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +37.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-2.0%), Thailand (-5.9%), Malaysia (-17.1%) and Vietnam (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+21 p.p.), the Philippines (+12 p.p.) and Myanmar (+7.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -6.9%, -11.3% and -22.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported meat of camels and other animals in ASEAN, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore totaled +1.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-2.2% per year) and Vietnam (-13.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, falling by -19.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
