Melon Market Size in ASEAN
In 2022, the ASEAN melon market decreased by -2.1% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Melon Production in ASEAN
In value terms, melon production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 24%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Myanmar (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), together accounting for 95% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +10.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average melon yield contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 24%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of melons were harvested in ASEAN; rising by 1.9% on 2021. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 25%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the melon harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Melon Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, shipments abroad of melons increased by 105% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 168%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, melon exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 260% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Myanmar was the main exporter of melons in ASEAN, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 57% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together generating a 39% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +48.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest melon supplying countries in ASEAN were Myanmar ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 89% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +58.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -25% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 70% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Melon Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, imports of melons in ASEAN totaled X tons, with an increase of 14% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, melon imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 30%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Singapore represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 43% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons), Brunei Darussalam (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together held near 55% share of total imports.
Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of melons. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+18.8%), Malaysia (+7.5%) and Thailand (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+12 p.p.), Brunei Darussalam (+11 p.p.), Singapore (+8.8 p.p.) and Thailand (+6.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -37.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported melons in ASEAN, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore amounted to +2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+14.4% per year) and Thailand (+5.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
