Mercury Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN mercury market expanded markedly to $X in 2021, increasing by 5.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a abrupt curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Mercury Production in ASEAN

In value terms, mercury production expanded sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a perceptible curtailment. From 2014 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

Mercury exports was estimated at X tons in 2021, picking up by 10% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 517%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mercury exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 1,671%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) was the major exporter of mercuries, making up 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), comprising a 16% share of total exports.

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mercuries exports, with a CAGR of +56.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+15.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Indonesia (+76 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -1.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest mercury supplier in ASEAN, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 32% share of total exports.

In Vietnam, mercury exports increased at an average annual rate of +23.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -19.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 187% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+7.7%).

Mercury Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, the amount of mercuries imported in ASEAN was estimated at X tons, with an increase of 7.6% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mercury imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 113%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), committing an 11% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mercuries imports, with a CAGR of +36.1% from 2012 to 2021. Malaysia (-18.3%) and Singapore (-38.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+85 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-14.8 p.p.) and Singapore (-52.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mercuries in ASEAN, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

In Vietnam, mercury imports increased at an average annual rate of +31.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (-21.1% per year) and Singapore (-45.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
