After three years of decline, the ASEAN metallised yarn market increased by 18% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Metallised Yarn Production in ASEAN
In value terms, metallised yarn production expanded notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 203% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Metallised Yarn Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, shipments abroad of metallised yarn and strip decreased by -28.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, metallised yarn exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 26%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) was the key exporter of metallised yarn and strip, comprising 46% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together took near 53% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Cambodia (with a CAGR of +105.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 89% of total exports. Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 4.3%.
Among the main exporting countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +97.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Metallised Yarn Imports
Imports in ASEAN
After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of metallised yarn and strip increased by 48% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, metallised yarn imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Indonesia represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 55% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (9.9%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (9.4%) and the Philippines (5.1%). Cambodia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to metallised yarn imports into Indonesia stood at +9.2%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+101.4%), the Philippines (+29.2%), Cambodia (+12.3%) and Myanmar (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +101.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-3.8%) and Thailand (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+29 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+9.4 p.p.), the Philippines (+4.6 p.p.) and Cambodia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-6.5 p.p.) and Thailand (-28.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 82% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 13%.
Among the main importing countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +72.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -24.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+17.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
