Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of microscopes and diffraction apparatus exported in ASEAN skyrocketed to X units, surging by 102% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, microscope exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +57.5% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Malaysia (X units) and Singapore (X units) prevails in exports structure, together constituting 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X units), achieving a 5.9% share of total exports. Vietnam (X units) and the Philippines (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +39.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 97% of total exports.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +20.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -23.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 60%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+15.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Microscope Imports
Imports in ASEAN
Microscope imports reached X units in 2021, growing by 3.3% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +13.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, microscope imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Singapore (X units) was the major importer of microscopes and diffraction apparatus, generating 38% of total imports. Malaysia (X units) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (18%), Thailand (11%), the Philippines (7.7%) and Vietnam (5.7%).
Imports into Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+7.4%), Malaysia (+7.0%), Indonesia (+4.9%) and Vietnam (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012-2021. The Philippines experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Malaysia (+4.5 p.p.), Thailand (+2.9 p.p.) and Indonesia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Philippines (-2.7 p.p.) and Singapore (-5.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported microscopes and diffraction apparatus in ASEAN, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 12% share.
In Singapore, microscope imports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-1.6% per year) and Thailand (-5.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -4.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
