The ASEAN mineral or aerated water market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Mineral or Aerated Waters in ASEAN

In value terms, mineral or aerated water production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 25%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

After four years of growth, shipments abroad of mineral or aerated waters decreased by -6.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, mineral or aerated water exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together generating a 32% share of total exports.

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mineral or aerated waters exports, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malaysia (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+54 p.p.) and Thailand (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-62.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest mineral or aerated water supplier in ASEAN, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

In Indonesia, mineral or aerated water exports increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-3.5% per year) and Malaysia (-10.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 43%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Mineral or Aerated Waters

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, supplies from abroad of mineral or aerated waters increased by 4.9% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 89%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mineral or aerated water imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) dominates imports structure, together achieving 73% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.3% share, followed by Cambodia (6.9%) and Vietnam (5.3%). Malaysia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +48.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mineral or aerated waters in ASEAN, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (+35.4% per year) and Thailand (+2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
