In 2021, the ASEAN motor boat market decreased by -2.1% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

The volume of export peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, motor boat exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 250% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Singapore was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 52% of total exports. Thailand (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 28% share, followed by Malaysia (12%). The Philippines (X units) and Myanmar (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest motor boat supplier in ASEAN, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Malaysia stood at -4.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-4.8% per year) and Thailand (+6.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 31% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 421%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while Myanmar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of motor boats and motor yachts, for pleasure or sports increased by 18% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 130%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor boat imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 146% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Singapore (X units) and Indonesia (X units) represented the major importers of motor boats and motor yachts, for pleasure or sports in ASEAN, together mixing up 61% of total imports. Thailand (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Malaysia (11%). Vietnam (X units), Cambodia (X units) and the Philippines (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Among the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +37.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
