Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, overseas shipments of motorcycles and bicycles decreased by -11.6% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 69%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, motorcycle and bicycle exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Cambodia (X units), distantly followed by Indonesia (X units), the Philippines (X units), Thailand (X units) and Vietnam (X units) were the key exporters of motorcycles and bicycles, together making up 95% of total exports. Singapore (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +148.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 88% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Cambodia, the Philippines and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 12%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +83.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, motorcycle and bicycle export price decreased by -5.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, motorcycle and bicycle imports in ASEAN soared to X units, picking up by 43% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a resilient increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, motorcycle and bicycle imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 29%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The Philippines was the largest importer of motorcycles and bicycles in ASEAN, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 48% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X units), Vietnam (X units), Thailand (X units), Indonesia (X units) and Singapore (X units), together comprising a 47% share of total imports. Myanmar (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +20.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+25.3%), Thailand (+21.1%), Singapore (+12.3%), Indonesia (+6.0%) and Malaysia (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +25.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Myanmar (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand increased by +23, +7.6 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motorcycles and bicycles in ASEAN, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with an 11% share.

In the Philippines, motorcycle and bicycle imports increased at an average annual rate of +24.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+17.8% per year) and Thailand (+12.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -14.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 104% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
