Mustard Seed Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN mustard seed market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, consumption saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the market value increased by 1.9%. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mustard seed production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 320%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Myanmar (X tons) remains the largest mustard seed producing country in ASEAN, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

In Myanmar, mustard seed production declined by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average yield of mustard seed in ASEAN reduced slightly to X kg per ha, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 4%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The mustard seed harvested area amounted to X ha in 2022, picking up by 4.4% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to mustard seed production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of mustard seed were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports saw moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 864%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mustard seed exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 268%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Myanmar represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 77% of total exports. Singapore (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (8.4%).

Exports from Myanmar increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+6.6%) and Singapore (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +6.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Singapore (+2.9 p.p.) and Malaysia (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Myanmar (-3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest mustard seed supplying countries in ASEAN were Myanmar ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Singapore, with a CAGR of +7.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -45.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 131% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Mustard Seed Imports

Imports in ASEAN

Mustard seed imports declined significantly to X tons in 2022, waning by -26.6% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 48%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mustard seed imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the main importer of mustard seed in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 72% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the Philippines (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 27% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mustard seed imports into Thailand stood at -1.8%. At the same time, the Philippines (+4.0%), Singapore (+3.9%) and Malaysia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +4.0% from 2012-2022. Malaysia (+4.3 p.p.), the Philippines (+2.9 p.p.) and Singapore (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -6.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mustard seed in ASEAN, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with an 11% share.

In Thailand, mustard seed imports declined by an average annual rate of -1.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+7.2% per year) and the Philippines (+10.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
