In 2021, the amount of needles, catheters, cannulae exported in ASEAN rose slightly to X units, picking up by 3.1% against the year before. In general, exports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 56%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, needles, catheters, cannulae exports amounted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +77.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the key exporter of needles, catheters, cannulae in ASEAN, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 62% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X units), the Philippines (X units) and Singapore (X units), together comprising a 33% share of total exports. Malaysia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the needles, catheters, cannulae exports, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+25.6%), Malaysia (+5.5%) and Singapore (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Philippines (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +16.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 31%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, overseas purchases of needles, catheters, cannulae decreased by -0.8% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, needles, catheters, cannulae imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of needles, catheters, cannulae, namely Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The Philippines (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X units) and Indonesia (X units). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +17.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
