Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, overseas shipments of newspapers, journals and periodicals increased by 18% to X units for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 37%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, newspaper exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Singapore (X units) was the key exporter of newspapers, journals and periodicals, mixing up 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X units), Thailand (X units) and Indonesia (X units), together comprising a 27% share of total exports. Vietnam (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to newspaper exports from Singapore stood at -9.2%. At the same time, Vietnam (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-3.4%), Malaysia (-8.5%) and Thailand (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+4.8 p.p.), Indonesia (+2.4 p.p.), Malaysia (+1.8 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -10.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest newspaper supplier in ASEAN, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 4.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore amounted to -8.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-12.6% per year) and Thailand (-13.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -5.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Malaysia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, overseas purchases of newspapers, journals and periodicals were finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, newspaper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Thailand (X units) and Indonesia (X units) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 73% of total imports. Brunei Darussalam (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.5% share, followed by Malaysia (7.6%) and Singapore (6.5%). The following importers - Vietnam (X units) and the Philippines (X units) - together made up 4.2% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +40.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported newspapers, journals and periodicals in ASEAN, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (-7.5% per year) and Singapore (-16.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -29.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Indonesia (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+16.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
