The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +43.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped in the following year.

Thailand (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Singapore (X units) and the Philippines (X units). Imports into Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+12.1%) and Thailand (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012-2022. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (-6.5%) and Brunei Darussalam (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines increased by +8.6, +6.8 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 79% share of total imports. The Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei Darussalam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +9.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
