Non-Wheat Flour Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, the ASEAN non-wheat flour market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the market value increased by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Non-Wheat Flour Production in ASEAN

In value terms, non-wheat flour production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 6%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Non-Wheat Flour Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, overseas shipments of non-wheat flours decreased by less than 0.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports contracted to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Thailand dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), constituting a 6.4% share of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-wheat flour exports from Thailand stood at +2.6%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+28.5%) and Vietnam (+27.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +28.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Vietnam (+5.5 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-5.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest non-wheat flour supplier in ASEAN, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand amounted to +2.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+23.3% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+9.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Non-Wheat Flour Imports

Imports in ASEAN

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of non-wheat flours decreased by -5.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented the largest importers of non-wheat flours in ASEAN, together finishing at near 53% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Singapore (9.1%), Myanmar (7.4%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (5.3%) and Cambodia (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +42.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-wheat flour importing markets in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 69% of total imports. Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Among the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +40.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Singapore ($X per ton) and the Philippines ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) and Myanmar ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
