Office Supply Market Size in ASEAN

In 2022, the ASEAN office supply market increased by 0.9% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Office Supply Production in ASEAN

In value terms, office supply production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 8.2%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of office or school supplies of plastics increased by 2.3% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, office supply exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 15%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam was the key exporter of office or school supplies of plastics in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2022. Indonesia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 26% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the office or school supplies of plastics exports, with a CAGR of +4.9% from 2012 to 2022. Indonesia (-5.0%), Thailand (-6.4%), Malaysia (-7.7%) and Singapore (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+27 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-4 p.p.), Thailand (-6.4 p.p.), Indonesia (-7.3 p.p.) and Malaysia (-9.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest office supply supplier in ASEAN, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with an 8.4% share.

In Vietnam, office supply exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (-2.6% per year) and Malaysia (-4.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 4.6% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Office Supply Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, purchases abroad of office or school supplies of plastics increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.6% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, office supply imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +15.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Philippines was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 37% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together took near 59% share of total imports. Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to office supply imports into the Philippines stood at +3.8%. At the same time, Myanmar (+17.6%), Vietnam (+13.0%), Malaysia (+11.6%), Thailand (+6.9%) and Indonesia (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +17.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+4.6 p.p.), Thailand (+4.6 p.p.), Indonesia (+4.1 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -17.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest office supply importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Singapore ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +13.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -13.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
