Onion And Shallot Market Size in ASEAN
The ASEAN onion and shallot market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -2.1% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Onion And Shallot Production in ASEAN
In value terms, onion and shallot production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 39%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Indonesia (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), with a combined 88% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average onion and shallot yield in ASEAN contracted slightly to X tons per ha, waning by -1.6% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 3.6% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the onion and shallot yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of onions and shallots were harvested in ASEAN; flattening at 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to onion and shallot production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, the amount of onions and shallots exported in ASEAN soared to X tons, rising by 32% compared with 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, onion and shallot exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Myanmar represented the major exporter of onions and shallots in ASEAN, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Malaysia (8.7%), Singapore (7.8%) and Vietnam (4.6%). The following exporters - Indonesia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.3% share of total exports.
Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the onions and shallots exports, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+29.3%), Singapore (+15.2%) and Malaysia (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Thailand (-7.3%), Indonesia (-14.7%) and Vietnam (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+58 p.p.), Singapore (+5.3 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -12.4%, -22% and -27.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest onion and shallot supplier in ASEAN, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 15% share.
In Myanmar, onion and shallot exports expanded at an average annual rate of +34.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+5.3% per year) and Thailand (-3.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, waning by -22.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, approx. X tons of onions and shallots were imported in ASEAN; picking up by 12% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Malaysia represented the largest importer of onions and shallots in ASEAN, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 57% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together generating a 40% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to onion and shallot imports into Malaysia stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Singapore (+2.8%) and Indonesia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +2.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-2.9%) and Vietnam (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+9.8 p.p.), Indonesia (+3.5 p.p.) and Singapore (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -2.3% and -12.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported onions and shallots in ASEAN, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 12% share.
In Malaysia, onion and shallot imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+3.6% per year) and Singapore (+6.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -5.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
