For the third year in a row, the ASEAN optical fiber cables market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 1.3% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +35.2% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, optical fiber cables production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 62%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, exports of optical fiber cables in ASEAN skyrocketed to X tons, surging by 34% on 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +122.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, optical fiber cables exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 46%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the largest exporters of optical fiber cables in ASEAN, together generating 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together creating a 23% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +409.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest optical fiber cables supplying countries in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 80% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +118.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Optical Fiber Cables Imports

Imports in ASEAN

For the third year in a row, ASEAN recorded growth in supplies from abroad of optical fiber cables, which increased by 1.3% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +38.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, optical fiber cables imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +42.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 43%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Philippines (X tons) represented the major importer of optical fiber cables, creating 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together constituting a 53% share of total imports. Myanmar (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+22.8%), Malaysia (+15.8%), Indonesia (+11.1%), Vietnam (+10.1%) and Singapore (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +22.8% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The Philippines (+21 p.p.), Malaysia (+2.9 p.p.) and Myanmar (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore and Thailand saw its share reduced by -5.8% and -19.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest optical fiber cables importing markets in ASEAN were the Philippines ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 73% of total imports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +26.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild downturn. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
