In 2021, the ASEAN organic surface active agent market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of organic surface active agents increased by 9% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +48.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, organic surface active agent exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of organic surface active agents, namely Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), achieving a 5.9% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of total exports. Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +20.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of organic surface active agents were imported in ASEAN; increasing by 11% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented the main importer of organic surface active agents in ASEAN, making up 87% of total import. Singapore (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Myanmar (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 12% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest organic surface active agent importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 61% share of total imports. Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +9.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
