Papaya Market Size in ASEAN
In 2022, the ASEAN papaya market decreased by -2.3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Papaya Production in ASEAN
In value terms, papaya production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Indonesia (X tons) remains the largest papaya producing country in ASEAN, comprising approx. 67% of total volume. Moreover, papaya production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Philippines (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Thailand (X tons), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Indonesia totaled +1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Philippines (-0.0% per year) and Thailand (-2.4% per year).
In 2022, the average papaya yield in ASEAN reduced to X tons per ha, which is down by -2.1% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 7.1%. Over the period under review, the papaya yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the papaya harvested area in ASEAN fell to X ha, dropping by -2.4% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 5.2%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Papaya Exports
Exports in ASEAN
After two years of decline, overseas shipments of papayas increased by 19% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, papaya exports soared to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Malaysia represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 67% of total exports. The Philippines (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Thailand (9.7%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to papaya exports from Malaysia stood at -3.3%. At the same time, Thailand (+15.1%) and the Philippines (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Philippines and Thailand increased by +10 and +7.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 98% of total exports.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +18.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, papaya export price increased by +72.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 16%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Papaya Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, supplies from abroad of papayas decreased by -1.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, papaya imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 12%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Singapore dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Brunei Darussalam (X tons), making up a 6.9% share of total imports.
Imports into Singapore decreased at an average annual rate of -4.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brunei Darussalam increased by +5.1 percentage points.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas in ASEAN, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports.
In Singapore, papaya imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +6.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+6.6%).
