The ASEAN paper and paperboard market contracted to $X in 2022, dropping by -6.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw resilient growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Paper And Paperboard Production in ASEAN

In value terms, paper and paperboard production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 79%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), when their volume increased by 19% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 20%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Malaysia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together finishing at 89% of total export. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up a 9.1% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +3.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 85% of total exports. Thailand and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +7.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas purchases of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) decreased by -46% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper and paperboard imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 31%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Singapore (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) represented the key importers of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in ASEAN, together making up 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together generating a 26% share of total imports. The following importers - Indonesia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in ASEAN, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore stood at -2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+0.0% per year) and Vietnam (+14.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price increased by +88.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
