Paper Knife Exports
Exports in ASEAN
Paper knife exports dropped significantly to X units in 2022, which is down by -31.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, paper knife exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 169%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam was the major exporter of paper knives in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was near 61% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X units) and Singapore (X units). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total exports.
Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paper knives exports, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Singapore (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+57 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-2.5 p.p.), Thailand (-11.1 p.p.) and Malaysia (-42.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest paper knife supplier in ASEAN, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam totaled +49.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+6.4% per year) and Singapore (+5.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 63% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Malaysia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Paper Knife Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, purchases abroad of paper knives increased by 46% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 49%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper knife imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Indonesia represented the key importer of paper knives in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X units), Thailand (X units), Myanmar (X units) and Malaysia (X units), together creating a 45% share of total imports. Singapore (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper knife imports into Indonesia stood at +6.2%. At the same time, Myanmar (+42.5%), Vietnam (+5.6%) and Malaysia (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +42.5% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Myanmar and Indonesia increased by +10 and +5.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest paper knife importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +17.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 7.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Myanmar (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
