In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) represented the major exporter of paper sacks and bags, committing 41% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total exports. Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of paper sacks and bags were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 28%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country
Indonesia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), committing a 7.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - together made up 7.6% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 64% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, the Philippines, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +41.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Vietnam ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
