In 2021, the ASEAN paper dishes and cups market decreased by -3.6% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups, when their volume increased by 23% to X tons. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +81.2% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together accounting for 93% of total export. Thailand (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +26.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 96% of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +28.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 8.3% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+12.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Paper Trays, Dishes, Plates And Cups

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, imports of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups in ASEAN rose rapidly to X tons, picking up by 9.8% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 42% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 50% share of total imports. Myanmar (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Myanmar (+75.3%), Vietnam (+47.1%), Brunei Darussalam (+13.7%), Indonesia (+11.7%) and Malaysia (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +75.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Philippines (-13.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+16 p.p.), Vietnam (+13 p.p.), Malaysia (+5.1 p.p.), Myanmar (+3.2 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -12% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper trays, dishes, plates and cups in ASEAN, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore stood at +4.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (-4.8% per year) and Vietnam (+49.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 15%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
