Dry Peas Market Size in ASEAN
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the ASEAN dry peas market, when its value decreased by -4.7% to $X. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Dry Peas Production in ASEAN
In value terms, dry peas production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Myanmar (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of dry peas production, accounting for 94% of total volume. Moreover, dry peas production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), more than tenfold.
In Myanmar, dry peas production plunged by an average annual rate of -5.8% over the period from 2012-2021.
The average dry peas yield expanded modestly to X kg per ha in 2021, rising by 3.4% compared with the year before. In general, the yield, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 3.4% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the dry peas harvested area in ASEAN fell modestly to X ha, dropping by -3.2% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to dry peas production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Dry Peas Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, approx. X tons of peas (dry) were exported in ASEAN; falling by -2.5% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a notable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 259% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, dry peas exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 374%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Myanmar dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (dry) exports, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Myanmar (+23 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest dry peas supplier in ASEAN, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Myanmar totaled +10.5%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dry peas export price increased by +74.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+5.7%).
Dry Peas Imports
Imports in ASEAN
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of peas (dry) decreased by -14.8% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 61%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dry peas imports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +22.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Philippines represented the key importer of peas (dry) in ASEAN, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by Thailand (9.2%) and Indonesia (8.4%). The following importers - Vietnam (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) - each recorded an 8.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Myanmar (with a CAGR of +34.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peas (dry) in ASEAN, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 13% share.
In the Philippines, dry peas imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-0.5% per year) and Thailand (+3.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
